MD finally will start, everytime!

I've been fighting a starting problem for over 4 years on my 1952 MD (FDBK 285523). Have checked everything, asked for help here, prayed, cussed, and other things!
Today, as I was replacing the sparkplug wires after cleaning the plugs, I checked the Service Manual (page 58, illustration 58A) and saw the magneto cap wires go 1,3,4,2 counterclockwise!
I then looked at the operator's manual (Page 37, illustration 42, and saw that diagram shows 1,2,4,3 counterclockwise!)
I had been using the Operators Manual to set up the mag for 4 years, and it is WRONG!
When set up 1,3,4,2 it starts like a dream and runs very smoothly!
Thanks for all the help over the years, hope my forum days are now just for fun. John

them damm books, must have been a beginner giving that information.
should have just compared it to another diesel's plug wires.
now you have a real mccormick instead of a j.d.two banger.

Glad to know, sure is easy to overlook things sometimes. Had a MD with serials below and above you once.
285266 and 285597. 285266 was in my home state of WV. Where's 285523 located?

Nope he has a 52. 285211 was the first MD completed in calender 1952. Closest info to his tractor I have is serial 285421 built 1-23-52.

Can't find my Operators Manual, but I see what your saying with the Service Manual.

Is the firing order printed on the block on an MD? I had mine off two winters ago and somehow it still starts.

285523 is in Wilsall, MT. I know who the last two owners were, so it has been here for some time. It was made late enough tht it has the 52 Super MD disc brakes. John

(quoted from post at 19:11:29 06/28/12) Glad you found your issue. Makes you feel good when a nagging problem like that is worked out.

Are you trying to taunt me about my rear main seal leak in my MD?

Hi John: Hey.. that is the best good news I have seen today.. Too bad it took so loooong to find the key problem. I guess it is part of the "Joy" of having an old old tractor.. Now using that Super MD should be even better and I wish you the best luck with it from now on.. I always enjoyed using ours for the thousands of hours I put on it..
Thanks for posting details of your efforts in correcting the problem..
