question on IH 88 series

It is called the tri six it has low med and high you can shift them on the fly but must press clutch. On the 1-6 1-2 is power shift then must clutch from 2-3 3-4 is power shift 4-5 must clutch 5-6 is power shift Overall very nice to drive no grinding gears.

18 gears and NO clutching?? Why wouldnt you prefer the magnum???? Put many hours in the seat of a 7240 magnum and the seat of a newer 305 and sometimes still would rather have the simplicity of the magnums. One of the best tractors ever built

I agree Magnum"s are one of the best tractors ever built. I"m not disputing that. I don"t like the full powershifts on Deere"s either. I would rather have a quad range tranny. I like to use the clutch.

We had a 4640 QR. It was fine working ground but a PITA mowing roadsides & on the grain cart having to use the clutch to shift. Traded it for a CIH 7140, life is much simpler. We've had several power shift tractors, both green & red. I can't think of a thing I would want to use a tractor that you had to use a clutch to shift gears.
