hole in battery

The battery on my f-cub has a small hole in it from the battery box rusting off and part of it rubbing on battery. Battery is about 6 months old. Can I patch it with roofing tar? THANKS

A auto parts store sells a stuff just for that and ho roofing tar will not hold long. I would also find a battery box like the ones used in boats so it does not happen again

There isn't much, if anything, that sticks to polyethylene. I'd probably get a long SS hose clamp (or several joined together) and wrap it around the battery. Get some soft rubber to place between the hole and the clamp. May need several layers to build up a thickness that will press against the hole. The roofing tar will be useful as gasket cement on the whole jury rigged repair.

Dan , I have used PL premium in a caulking tube.
Works on most wood and poly. I like JB weld for metal. oldiron29

My son works in a fiberglass mfg outfit. We patched a hole in the bottom of one years ago & it held until the battery went bad.

(quoted from post at 16:52:23 06/28/12) Just wondering.

Is "jury rigged" correct or should it be "Jerry rigged"?

define:jury-rigged
"Jury rigging refers to makeshift repairs or temporary contrivances, made with only the tools and materials that happen to be on hand. Originally a nautical term, on sailing ships a jury rig is a replacement mast and yards improvised in case of damage or loss of the original mast."

define:jerry-rigged
"The folk etymology is that "Jerry-rigged" was employed by World War II British troops to refer to the German use of scavenged parts to keep vehicles and weapons functional, from the use of "Jerry" as a pejorative term for German soldiers."

The nautical 'jury-rigged'is far older and gets my vote, but the other is certainly valid.
