IH gaskets vs. Aftermarket gaskets

called my local IH dealer, they want $112 for an IH head gasket set then he told me that the aftermarket people they work with have a set for $40....

I was told to not go cheap on a head gasket so is it worth the money to buy the IH kit or should I save some cash and go with the aftermarket? I dont want to buy junk and that is one hell of a price difference!!

Not sure what tractor you have, but on my H i got an aftermarket head gasket set with all of the other gaskets for $50 at NAPA and it is still fine after two years.

It is unlikely that Case/IH makes any of their own gaskets. The last head gasket I bought from a Case/IH dealer was made by one of the major gasket makers, not IH. It worked just fine.

Last head gasket I got at the dealer was made by Felpro. Not saying yours would be the same, but after that, I just get mine from either Napa, or my local parts guy.

Not sure what there looking up but the last one i got from CNH was 55-60 bucks. Heck the Gasket for the MD-450D is 130... I would use the gasket off this site, they sell Victorinez (sp) gaskets, I have used feel pros as well but in my opinion they do not hold up as well to high compression as the victors do. I believe the CNH gasket is also made by victor same build, thickness etc. Either way you go you will be fine, copper coat and done. Most Most important make sure both surfaces are clean! lots of brake part cleaner / either / etc dry and clean!

Victor and Felpro make most all gaskets for everybody.

At the GM dealership, most are made by victor and put in an expensive GM box.

I personally like Victor R gaskets and trust them, as i make my living off of them sealing and not leaking. Re-do's don't pay very well at the dealership. (flat rate commission)

Gaskets are just like buying engine oil. There are only a few packagers and makers of both oil and gaskets. The cheaper gaskets are as good as the IH gaskets. Heck they are probably made by the same company.

Thanks for the responses guys, I think im going to go with the one on this site im just not sure which kit, there are two kits: a head gasket set and a upper gasket set, anyone know the differences?

IH did sell Victor Reinz head gaskets. I like the victor ones the best but thats just me. Also haven't purchase one from IH lately to know what they have. For a C-248 engine IH was selling VR-1698 or IH 369957R2 head gasket. For C-264 and C281 IH 48957-DF or VR 3149. Think VR still sells both. Fel Pro used to sell both types but went to one # now I think.
I like the VR-1698 the best on a M engine. Problem is with a late LP head like for a later 400 and all 450 tractors like I think you are using it may not work. Due to casting and gasket making tolerances the VR-1698 gasket may hang into the combustion chamber on the spark plug side of the LP head. Just a little and maybe only one combustin chamber sometimes. Sometimes they fit good.
But if your only buying one gasket or don't have a c-248 one to check you may want the VR-3149 type or compareiable head gasket.
Looks like a fel pro # sold here and I think you will get the same gasket for all three engines, C-248, C-264 or C-281.

You need what is more commonly referred to as a "valve grind gasket set" It includes the head gasket, rocker cover gaskets, thermostat installation gasket, manifold to head gaskets, and carb to manifold gasket. I can fix you right up with the correct Victor-Renz gasket set.

Thanks rusty, i'm pretty sure I have your website in my favorites, ill be putting an order in soon, thanks

Think I was mixed up about the head, thought you posted it was a 450 LP head. From another post it looks like you may just have a 450 head.
What is the head casting #? Could you find a number on the old head gasket? If its a 450 gas head the VR 1698 works for me on a M with 4 or 3-7/8 inch ID sleeves.

it is a 450 head, cant get the casting number right now because the head is at the machine shop getting checked out. I did some research after you gave me all the information and you were right, the kit that victor sells covers all engine sizes so im going to send my business to Rustyfarmall, he has a very reasonable priced victor kit. Thank you very much for the help, I will probably be picking your brain more in the future, thanks again ~Anthony
