head gasket

I always use grease on my head gaskets. That makes it easier to remove if I want to remove it in the near future.

Also, tighten it from the center out in stages (50 ft-lbs, 60 ft-lbs, etc.). The grease will allow it to slip as you flatten the gasket.

I agree with F-Dean, except on the grease. That's a new one on me. The gasket should say on it if it needs a sealant. My guess is that the gasket needs a sealing compound, I use "Copper Coat" in a spray can. Good Luck! -Andy

my 2 cents worth; my friend says spray both sides of the gasket with aluminum paint, let dry.

of course there is a bolt tightening sequence. and torque. use thicker gasket not steel.

permatex high tac spray is the thing to use. i dont know why copper coat always comes up in these questions. to me copper coat is to put on bolt threads so they dont rust. permatex high tac spray is the only thing i have used for 35 yrs. no leaksge or seapage either. have used it on many diesel 282 engines and never any leakage , as this is a true test on that engine. so i will not even try anything else or copper coat. have also used grease on old 10-20 engines with good luck.

another user of CopperCoat in a spray can
follow the bolt sequence multiple times bringing the torque up
slowly and in stages until you get to the spec.
re-torque after warm-up
