5x88 series question

Been looking for a mid to higher power 2wd tractor for field work. Most of the Internationals in the 5088 5288 5488 series I have looked at either say trans has updates or when you are sitting in the tractor with it idleing the gear shifter just drops between gears grinding and a loud thumping coming for the rear end. Where the trans and rear ends a common problem on those models? Have looked at 86 series and I'm almost favoring those models (1586 1486) over the 5X88 series.

Thanks for any answers

Updates seals on clutch packs, countershaft redesign and one other thing I can't remember done to the clutch. The '88 series had a better transmission IMHO than the '86. I have a 1586 and love the power but the trans only has a three speed trans compared to the others with a four speed. In my opinion it has the better rearend than the 1486. The 1486 has the same rear as a 1086. The 1586 has the planetary rear. If you buy a '86 check to see if it was turned up. There are a lot of 14's running 160+ and 15's close to 200. If they have that kind of hp and a lot of hrs and never had the rearend rebuilt it probably is time. Also it will be cheaper to repair an '86 than an '88 because so few of the 88's were made.
