M's head at the machine shop, quick question

if the head is not cracked im going to have it leveled if it needs it and should I have the valves done since it is out? Thanks, anthony

Your machinist can best advise you on that.. without seeing the head, no one can tell you what it needs. Chances are, at the very least, it could use a lapping. If the guides are worn, or the valves/seats worn or damaged, then of course it should be done. If you want a smooth running, easy starting tractor, the valves MUST be in good shape. Now is the time to do it.

If you have a good auto machine shop they can determine what your head needs. If the valves are too thin about 1/32" they should replace them.
I would replace the valve springs. They can determine if the head needs to be milled. They may also need to grind the valves. Hal

YES, definitley have the valves and seats done, and the guides also if the machinist thinks it necessary. Properly functioning valves will make a HUGE difference in how the tractor runs, performs, and sounds.

Make sure you want to spend the money before you start. I ended up putting a grand into a head by the time I finished. An engine will RUN with things not optimum.

Yes, while its off, have it looked over and any problems fixed. Most machine shops will test everything and only replace what's needed. My SM head was $175 and did all new seats, replaced a bunch of valves, couple of springs, bunch of guides...all worth the money

Yes, I would do whatever the shop thought was necessary. They can check out all that stuff. I didn't think it was necessary on my MD and it is a whole different machine now that I went through the head.

You need a new machine shop more than anything else! My WD-9 head was $300 and my MD head was $225. Guides, valves ground, milled, new seats in the 9.

well maybe he had cracks repaired and that would bring it to the 1000.00 mark, and also new valves at 40.00 each add up. 400-500 is quite an average to expect on head work if the machine shop is any good. and dont forget 4cyl. or 6 cyl. more cyl's and the price is more.

Having cracks repaired isn't normal head work. I assumed he was talking 4 cylinder Farmall. You are not making equal comparisons.

why not ? all he said was he stuck 1000.00 into a head and i say its possible. not comparing anything.

No kidding, anything is possible. I could spend $2000 if I wanted...

Got to thinking, I did save a bunch of money on the 9 head because I salvaged valves out of my cracked head. That is 8 or 12 valves worth of savings.
