The Farmall A Arrives!

We went to collect the new Farmall A yesterday. Pictures of what we collected. It was an instant success at the farm. My brother just could not believe I had bought it and even my mother liked it and said she would drive it. Pictures of tractor attached. It will need a new main fuel tank tap and water trap, new fuel lines, new high tension leads, new water temp gauge, an oil pressure gauge, radiator cap, exhaust pipe and an investigation of the off-side brake, which does not work. It starts easily and runs very well, despite the awful HT leads. It will also need a swinging drawbar.

Per the S/N it is a 1941. I am wondering if the block was changed as I don't remember the two longitudinal cast ribs behind the carb in photo 5. I know my grandfathers 1941 B does not have them while my brothers 1946 B does.

How long has the intake hose been off of the carb/air cleaner in photo 5? Hopefully not long.

I see it has a starter but no generator. Are you planning on completeing the electrical system?

Good looking unit....now the fun begins, scrounging parts to complete it.

Well the weather has been wet and cold and I believe the air inlet hose has not been off for long. I refitted it today. I had a good look at the tractor today and so far as various permanent parts it looks like I'll need:
fuel pipes
petrol/kerosene carburetor
generator and bracket
instrument panel and instruments / switches etc.
battery box
starter motor switch and rod
choke rod
If anyone is willing to sell any or all of these, I would be happy to buy them and pay for shipping. No chance of me finding the parts out here.

You will find 1000 uses for it. They are nicely powerful, and bulldog tough little guys. They drive well and family members like them enough to help do real things. Congratulations, Jim

one thing ive found, on the spark plug wires, with the 6v mag, do not use the modern graphite filled wires, get the old style solid core style, they work much better

I like the #2 spark plug wire. It must have been put on by the same guy that did the fuel shut-off.

I see a "1" in front of the rest of that serial number, makes it a 1946 tractor.

Also note part of a pneumatic lift still under the fuel tank. Don't see any other parts of it.

Now that you mention the 1 in front of the serial number, I now see it as well. The ribs on the block behind the carb are correct. Sorry for the confusion.

You find the darndest things on tractors. People use what
they have. Good luck with your A they are great little tractors.

Thanks everyone! Yes, the high tension lead is less than desirable to say the least, though the tractor runs really nicely in spite of it. Everyone loves that little tractor. When I bought the Farmall H, the family all looked at me with a tolerant "there he goes again" resignation. When the 1947 Farmall M turned up they all just said "typical". When the Farmall A arrived on Saturday, everyone wanted to drive it! They have all driven it further than I have! I have purchased new front tyres, because 5.50-15 Olympic Air Ride cross ply road tyres just should not be on a tractor. New 7/8" core plugs for the manifold will arrive tomorrow. Progress begins.
