when i bought this c farmall it started easy but the motor was worn out. we pulled engine had it rebuilt and reinstalled and now will not start. you can pull it off and it cranks and runs perfect.
when you try to start, it wont spin but a bought quarter round. new 6 volt battery, rebuild starter and new 2 guage cables. what else could it be?

I have a Farmall Cub with same issues, thought it was ground wire, BUT my mechanic told me to connect jumper cable from the hot battery post to the nut on the starter. It started faster than it ever did. find out, the cable is corroded inside. doesn't look bad but it is. hope this works.

You mention you are using 2 gauge battery cables, which are typically meant for 12V systems. Six volt systems need bigger battery cables to work properly. You should use 2/0 cable and it will more than likely cure the problem.

2 gauge might be on the small side for a C. They have pretty long cables. Put a pair of 2ga or bigger jumper cables (not booster cables)in parallel with the existing setup direct from battery ground to the starter motor mounting bolt, and the other from hot to the starter switch terminal. This doubles the amount of copper in the path. If it spins now, 0ga cable might be needed, Jim

Could be a lot of things but first I would use larger battery cables - I use 00 size with soldered terminals on all my 6 volt systems. You can get them made to the correct lengths at any good auto parts store. Recharge your new battery to full voltage as you may have depleated it somewhat trying to start it in your prior attempts. Have also found using one of the starter motor attachment to bell housing bolts for a ground that helps a lot. Also, I use external teeth washers at the cable attach points for increased contact by getting a good bite into the metal.
You didn't note if you painted the tractor or not as part of the engine upgrade but if you did paint anywhere in the path of the ground cable will make for a bad ground and will require cleaning until mating surfaces are free of paint, Hal.

2 gauge cables are completely adequate for a C, I have 2 gauge on the five 6 volt tractors I have, including a Super H. I am currently "restoring" a Super M that was never changed to 12 volt, I will use 2 gauge on that one too. Highly possible that you have bad connections, or it is out of time or some other electrical problem. My restored Super A has 2 gauge, when I bought it, it had 6 gauge. I had 6 gauge on it for years -- no it didn't start very well. 2 gauge is fine in the summer and ok for winter as long as the connections are clean. Clean connections and cables are more important than the size.

farmalls are bad to lose ground. C s are particularly bad. ground cable is connected to a sheet metal box that sits on heavy metal. try jumper cable from battery post ground, to a good thick metal somewhere.

Had similar problem with dad's C. Ground cable was attached to the box on the steering pedestal but once I attached the ground cable to the hydraulic unit that solved our issue.
