another 454/464/484/574/584/etc. question -- steering hoses

One of the hoses going to the steering cylinder on my 454 has a small leak, and I want to take care of it before it becomes a big one. But it"s really nonobvious how to get at the end of it where it attaches to the nipple coming down through the front casting. I can just barely -- at the expense of knuckle skin -- get a wrench above the axle and into the little opening enough to maybe turn the fitting about a quarter-turn before I have to reposition the wrench again.

Would I be better able to do it if I were to take off the front weight holder and work from the front, or is that not any easier? Thanks.

Tried again and found that if I hold everything _just_ right I can slip a plumber's basin wrench up there from the bottom. Not certain whether I can get enough torque with a basin wrench but I'm not going to do the experiment till I have the new hose in hand.

I've done the hoses on the 495, the grease zerk on the front axle pivot wore a hole in one hose. They can be done from the underside, but like you said, ou have to reposition wrench, stubby wrench set helps some.
