Lubrication of disc brakes

Can you lube the balls in disc brakes (SMTA) with anything to keep them rolling smoother? Anything else I should do maintenance/lube wise?

sure dont hurt to lube them but lightly. and any other moveable linkage. just dont get anything an the friction disc's. the only problem is though then the friction dust starts sticking to lubed stuff. it's kind of your own disgression thing. coppercoat should be ok to use for that.make sure springs are all ok and not weak. and make sure pressure plates are all ok.

Use them. I have a Super H that sat for a year--Brakes were ok a year ago, now they won't stop. No oil on them.

They make a spray graphite that will dry and leave a film on the parts. That is what I used on mine. Like the other post said, grease and oil will attract dirt and brake dust.

I believe in clean and shiny then a product that leaves a dry film Tri flo and similar PTFE based products ar my choice.

The total clearance when the expander is as thin as it can go, and the disks are counted when compared to the housing to tractor distance should be more than .030" and less than .050". Machining the mating surface of the housing may be needed to make this happen. Jim

they are both the same stuff just diff. color. i have each one in the shop. both are for the same thing... to prevent stuff from siezing.

Well, the left one is trashed. The drain hole was plugged and it must have gotten water in it. There was moist rusty crud up to the hole where the yoke comes out. Every metal braking surface is covered with pits. Two of the three springs were rusted to pieces and the balls are junk. I am going to buy three new springs and throw it back together. It will be good enough to go pulling on Saturday. It is going to take a lot of time and money to make this thing like new again. I am assuming they don't make any of the metal pieces new anymore???

Did M&W make aftermarket brake components? The right hand brake had an M over a W casting mark on it. The left side was different.

I forgot to say that I was in there like 5 years ago to inspect/restore the brakes. I just cleaned everything up and put them back together. They have been fading slowly for the past couple years.

Here are some pictures.

The way to look at it is, what do you have to lose....a couple of springs and balls. I would buff up the disc surfaces just to knock off the surface rust. The pitting wont hurt a thing. Clean the ball grooves, lube with hi temp grease, lube the linkage, and lube the three areas of the expanders where it contacts the brake cover. (keeps the expander centered in the cover)

I'll bet you will be surprised how well they work. Did the same to my 560 and was surprised.

That's what I started to do last night. I have things pretty clean looking, but not perfect. Steel wool seemed to do the best job, but it was slow.

While your at it get your 4 inch grinder and enlarge the drain hole so it does not get blocked again. Those springs are like $12 apiece at CNH, have got them off of ebay for around $20 for all 6.

I have used anti-sieze and it has worked well, fifteen years+ now on a SH since it got all new springs, discs and balls...still works like the day I did it,but, this tractor gets used often. I think the troubles start when they sit around alot and get rust going. At that time I got parts at the IH dealer, maybe what you can get now is only from the Far East? dont know, but if so, I would rather have the rusty OE stuff than the kinda-fit China parts, IMO.

Yes sir. Just picked up the springs for $36ish. My local dealer just sold six yesterday and was sold out. Otters in Burlington had a bunch so I headed over there.
