Inquired about a Super H for sale, but he said that 5th gear didn't work, seems odd that 5th would be out not being used that often. Question is, what might/is the cause of this ?, is it a fairly straight forward repair & are the parts available ? Haven't seen it yet.

maybe factory locked out? ordered with steel wheels? just a guess.

does it jump out of gear or not go in at all?

or just noisy?

Al - It could be as simple as 5th gear is locked out.

You can quickly tell by trying to move the shifter into 5th. If it won't move beyond the center (neutral) gate, 5th gear is locked out.

The "fix" is simple: Remove the special lockout bolt in the left front of tranny cover and replace it with a standard (shorter) bolt.

If that's not it you'll need to remove the tranny cover for peek inside. Possible problems are worn 4th-5th sliding gear, a worn input shaft/gear assembly, or a worn/bent 4th-5th shift fork and rail.

The owner said it hasn't worked for some time, he said it just grinds, but don't know if he means it grinds while it's in 5th, or it grinds trying to get it into 5th gear ?

I can understand, those old H's and I assume Super H's were a little over geared or under motored to be starting out in 5th gear like you should. So the procedure became get her rolling in 4th and put the clutch in and try to mash'er into 5th before it stopped rolling 'cause you needed that little but of rolling to get it rolling down the road if you had much of a load behind you like a full hay wagon or full manure spreader.

(quoted from post at 10:51:44 06/21/12) The owner said it hasn't worked for some time, he said it just grinds, but don't know if he means it grinds while it's in 5th, or it grinds trying to get it into 5th gear ?

That's from grinding the gears when you shift from 4th to 5th. Take it apart and it is simple to see why it happens.

Look at my photobucket and you will see what is wrong. 5th rides inside 4th gear. This only accelerates the problems. Ask me how I know.

4th and 5th sliding gear has teeth that lock on the transmission input shaft much like splines when shifted to 5th. Probably need a transmission input shaft and a 4th, 5th sliding gear to repair. Transmission main shaft bearing into the input shaft may be bad also.
Good used parts for a SH transmission are hard to find due to less numbers made. Don't know if anyone is making aftermarket replacements. If there's any new old stock I couldn't find any the last time I looked.

Fifth is direct to the differential by locking the input shaft to the output shaft. 4th gear is slid forward and internal splines mesh with external splines on the input shaft. As is often the case, 50 years or more of raking it into fifth wears the splines off of both the 4-5 slider, and the input shaft. There are used gears, and possible NOS, and someone might be welding them up and remachining them. Replacement is the real option. It can be done without splitting the tractor, but the trans platform must come off. Jim

Al - "He said it just grinds...." is not a good omen(!)

You might get lucky and find it's simply a bent shift fork. However more likely the 4-5 input and sliding gears are ruined from abuse.

If you can find a new or used input shaft gear and 4th-5th sliding gear it is an easy job. I put the complete working parts of a Super H transmission in my H and it makes it much nicer for haying and pulling wagons, which is basically all it does. It is a lot of parts to handle but nothing complicated.
