w9 exhaust popping noise

i got a w9 that makes a popping noise out of the exhaust and also backfires out of carb at the same time.does this under any kind of a load and has no power. also noticed a black gas smelling residue seeping out of intake gaskets. all new ignition parts and carb kit that was installed a month ago. dont know if it could be sticky valve or what any help would be very helpful.

first on list is a compression check. the results will tell you whats next.

like rustred said, run a compression test. may need a valve job. also, if you are still running the fuel pump on the w-9, check your oil for presence of gasoline. it is not uncommon for the diaphram in the fuel pump to wear out and leak raw gas into the crankcase. if its a later w-9, steiners has the rebuild kit for the fuel pump.

Since you mention ignition parts have been replaced I would check timing first. Then the compression test.Or if the valves haven't been checked lately check valve clearance.

If fuel in the gas, run line direct from tank to carb. Been running mine like that for 50+ years.
