1102B Paint Code

Fay's "Originality Guide" states (pg 12):
In 1949, IH changed bot the shade and the chemistry of the agricultural tractor paint, switching to what IH called 1102B. 1102B was actually a slightly lighter, yellower shade than IH #50, as well as being slightly more reflective. The differences are again slight, but would show up on tractors placed side by side...

Is there a code to use for 1102B or do they just sub it back to IH #50? I am painting a 1951 WD-9 and researching what is the "correct" paint for the tractor.

Ask your DuPont or PPG dealer. My PPG dealer could not cross 1102B. Further, IH 50 crosses to PPG 70019, which comes up as a Chrysler color. Use what you want, I don't think even 2150 is correct any more, due to enviornmental changes affecting the color. No two brands are going to match.

I figured you would show up here. I am probably going to just have my friendly PPG dealer paint the whole thing for me. He is a friend and neighbor. I had him come over to look at the tin work and he wanted to know why I didn't just bring him the whole thing to paint. He wasn't outragously priced and at least I know it will get done perfectly with him in charge. I figure I might as well.

While you are here, do you just epoxy and paint the cast frame without any surfacer?

Have you tried to cross IH #50 yet? Would it look funny to me because it wasn't the "right red"?

No surfacer on cast. I haven't used IH 50. I use a modified version of 2150, PPG 71310 with more red and less orange. As I said the original colors are hard to come by, particulary if the one mixing goes to sleep, as what must have happened to one batch of 71310 a few years ago.

I work for a PPG mixing bank. IH #50 is still available, So is IH
#2150. The 1102B and 201A are no longer available do to the
led changes. The best thing you can do is, if you know the
underside of the hood or rear of air cleaner set up or anything
like that, has NEVER been painted and has the factory color on it,
you can bring the piece in to have it "scanned" and they can mix
that color. I did this myself with a dash from a Farmall 460.
Witch was the factory grey, found a good spot, and it mixed
perfectly. 1937-1961 was #50. 1962-1980 was #2150. Now
keep in mind when the "New Style 1958-1962 " 460-560 models
came, the paint change came in as well with the 201A '58-'59
and 1102B mid '59-'62.
