Bolster steering shaft 350

I have the upper bushing ordered ($50.00) from the dealer, also the oil seal ($15.00). The seal looks (due to it"s location) rather difficult to get in place without damage. I think I will just drill and tap the bolster for a grease zerk like the bottom bushing has. The steering worm gear has had grease for a long time which is probably what wore out the bushing. At least this way the bushing will be lubed and I don"t have to worry about oil leaking past a damaged seal.Does anyone see a problem with that? The thrust bearing and lower bushing appear to be good and tight.
Thanks, Tom/Idaho

If you mean the seal that is inside the bolster, it is fairly easy to replace. If I remember correctly I put the right size socket on an extension, lined the seal up and tapped it in -- I have had more trouble with seals that were in the open than that one. Bushings on my Super M had oil and were still worn.

Problem with that seal is you can put it in an damage it and not know it until it leaks. You need a tool with a square edge. Most all sockets have a chamfer and will cave the seal in some. I had a tool made for installing them with a nice long pilot going up into the bushing.

Took me two tries at it. Dealer told me I did good. Said it took them three times the last one they did in their shop.
