H Starter Hang Up

Have a new starter installed, had problems with the drive not always engaging, replaced the drive with the cushioned type that I believe Rusty Farmall recomends & has been working fine. I'm letting the farmer down the road use it for raking & such, but he had the problem with the starter jamming & didn't know the trick of putting in 5th gear & rocking back & forth (he's not that well versed in Farmalls) to free it up. My question is, what causes this to happen, & what's the best way to fix ? Is it just a matter of some lubrication on the starter drive shaft, although I believe that it's not dry, or would some light grease on the starter gear, shaft, & the ring gear solve this problem ? Thanks for all & any responses. AL

Take a look in the hole when you have the starter out. The bad spot on the ring gear should be right there because the engine tends to stop in the same spot every time. Try cleaning up the teeth with a file, that might help.

I sort of agree with the other guy but it stops in the same are most of the time not all the time. Either way likely to have burrs and or a ruff area on the ring gear which is what causes the problem

Tell you something else that can cause problems. When you push the starter button, do it firmly. I have seen more than one stick when in good shape just because the button was not firmly pushed. Will stick for one operator and never bother with a different one.
