Farmall H that will only start on a hill by caching in gear and will start and run fine after moving a few feet. The tractor does crank jsut fine has new cap, points, wire and plugs. Gas is flowing and added 4 gal of high test. at one time the tractor started just fine by batter alone, any ideas?
Thanks

An engine needs 3 things to run. Compression spark and fuel all at the correct time. You need a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. Points should be set at 0.020 and check that at all four lobe in the distributor. Pull the air cleaner tube off and try holding your hand over the air intake. You should get a good suction there and your hand should get covered with fuel. If you do not get both then you have a fuel/compression problem. Low suction compression problem no gas on you hand a carb problem

If I had to guess (which I do because I am not there
to see the tractor) I'd say your starter motor is
robbing the juice to your coil. I got the habit
years ago to crank a little and then once the engine
was rolling over good let go the button and it would
fire. If you keep grinding away they never start. I
have a Ferguson that always starts that way.

Sounds like a good guess to me.

I'd check all your battery connections, especially the ground connection on the tractor side.

Even if it doesn't fix the problem, it's never a waste of time to make sure they're all clean and solid.
