B 414 how to change 12 volt positive to 12 volt negative

I just bought a B414 with gas engine. It is running 12 volt positive and I want to change it over to 12 volt negative ground system. It still has the generator on it, How can the change be made? Thanks.

Hard to say on a generator system. Some it is a simple matter of switching and then polarizing it. And on others that just burns things up. Me I would install and alternator one like out of a 1980 Chev pick up no power any thing no AC

Switch the wires on the ampmeter, coil and battery cables. Polarize the gen. before starting it. Check the regulator if it is good for + or - ground or not. May have to replace it.

Why change? Check the regulator it just mite be for pos gmd and changing the polarity will probably toast it if you change grounds

OK, If I leave it a positive ground system, will regular 12v lights work? And if I did need to jump start, just put the ground cable on the tractor positive and ground the hot cable? Also, can I use a standard 12 neg. ground battery charger to charge the battery?

Your lights don't care what the ground is. ALWAYS connect positive to positive, negative to negative, regardless of which terminal is the ground. The same for the charger. If you want to use negative ground, go ahead. It may damage the voltage regulator, it may not. If it does buy a new regulator. It won't hurt the generator. If you switch you have to polarize the generator, and change the ammeter connections as noted.

With negative ground being the USA standard for the past 50+ years we have erroneously taught ourselves that the Red cable is positive and the black cable is ground.

Truth is, a battery charger (jumper cables also)know POSITIVE and NEGATIVE, but they know nothing about ground. The charger does not see the frame as ground but rather as an extension cord for the associated positive or negative battery post.

If we can train our minds to think Positive and Negative we can eliminate all confusion about battery chargers
