I have the type of switch that attaches to the top of the starter & when you pull a rod a bellcrank pushes in a button which makes contact with the head of a brass bolt (inside the switch assy. )& a brass knob protruding from the starter housing. It worked just fine when I parked it now it will not make contact, installed a new switch same thing. when we remove the switch & touch the bat. cable to the protruding brass knob it works just fine ???!!!

If the button on the starter is not grooved too deep you can file it nice and smooth again and then by slotting the mounting screw holes in the switch you may get by. Other wise , it means soldering a new stud into the starter. Now days it is almost impossible to find a quality switch. Some of them are made so the movable contact does not pivot and therefore almost impossible to make contact on both statinary contacts at the same time. I replaced a lot of starter studs (buttons) over the years but the last couple I did were a real pain to get a good switch to go with it.

yes there is a lot of slope I filed it smooth & slotted the holes, the little contact thing that touches both poles is free to pivot a little but prob not as much as the old one. Will try again in morning thank you both for the help!

See if you can rock the tractor with it in high gear and watch the fan to see if it moves. Sounds like the starter may be locked (not uncommon for C123 engines). If it is locked and you can't turn using a hand crank or by rocking, loosen the two starter bolts and rock it again in high gear until it pops loose. Sometimes you can get it to pop loose without loosing the starter bolts. Sometimes you can pop it loose with the hand crank.

Check the screws you used to mount the switch....sometimes they are too long and they ground out the internal parts so it will not work...sounds like that may be the case since when you take the switch off it will work for you.

Ive had some problems with a new sw the stud where the batt connects turned and the tapered contac would not make contac cause if your starter turns over when touching the cable it is not locked up and the starter is ok.
