My son and his family came down last week for a visit. While he was here, we decided to see if we could locate the 560 my Dad farmed with back in the early 60's. I know the man that owns it now and through several phone calls finally got hold of him. He was out of town but said we were more than welcome to go take pics and look at it.
When we got there, not only did we find last one Dad used, but also another 560 he had used, along with a 6 row planter.
Both tractors were running when they parked 2 years ago. One has some "southern engineered" wheel fenders mounted because they used it to pull a little trailer in the cotton fields to pick up tumbleweeds and cockleburrs ahead of the strippers. The other one was used to pull a sandfighter with.
Going to call the guy back this week and see if we negotiate a reasonable price for the tractor and planter.

After a rain when the cotton plants are small, when the wind gets up it dries the ground out and then the loose sand acts like a sandblaster and will burn the leaves off the plant. They use a sandfighter to flip up the ground to stop the sand from blowing. Similar to a rotary hoe but the tines are bigger.

John, A True Sand Fighter is a contraption the Farmers in the South High Plains of Texas, Okla.panhandle, S W Kansas, S E Colo., use for break up the surface tension of sand country after a Plastering rain and the soil surface is beat flat. At that point with no clods left to break up the wind @ the soil surface that causes to sand to start blowing.
This contraption is a frame with a center shaft, with 3 paddles welded to it (like a 3 bladed airplane prop) the paddles are spaced about 7 to 8 in apart in a twisting rotation fashion from the one before it. they are light wt and pretty wide I have seen some 35 ft wide. Most are tow models, used and left in a particular field corner till the next time it is needed.
Since the mid 80s with the advent of the folding 3pt Rotary Hoes, it will do much the same work as a Sand Fighter but had better portability that the older Sand Fighters.Hope this helps!

John A.
