H transmission bearing noises

I have a noise in the transmission on my H that only appears with the clutch pedal up. It is a whirring noise, kind of like a bearing is wearing out.

I have the transmission input shaft bearing carrier out and the pilot bearing off. Both bearings in the carrier feel good. The pilot bearing feels a little rough, the rollers look good, there is not much more radial and axial play than a new bearing, and the race inside the input shaft (transmission driving shaft pn 52945 DE )looks frosted.

I'm guessing the pilot bearing is bad.

Is the input shaft scrap too (I can't get a good close up photo) ? Should I just replace the input shaft along with the pilot bearing as a matter of course ?

Thanks

If the inside is worn so much the bearing moves around you do need to replace it; I tried a bushing once, didn't work at all. This site sells replacements.

I would remove the pilot bearing and stick it in the hole where it rides and see if you have slop there. If not then I wouldn't think you'd need to replace the constant mesh gear.

Does it make the noise while setting with the tractor idleing and the clutch out? Then when you push the clutch in you can hear it slow down? It sounds very similiar to what my super M is doing. I was wondering if that is where I should start looking. Also depending on what gear the tractor is in the noise could get louder or quieter?

Replace the other 2 bearings on the upper shaft not hard at all to get it out if you have the top cover off. But, I can't tell you if you need lower bearings also, they are more difficult, for me anyway.

It makes the noise idling in nuetral with the clutch engaged. Disengaging the clutch ( pushing down the pedal) stops the noise. It may (probably ) make noise in gear but there are so many other noises it is hard to distinguish.

Look for a grease seal that is leaking on the front of the transmission. Check that bearing. If that is just a bad seal, check the pilot bearing on the transmission input shaft.

That sounds exactly like my super m. There is a couple big leaks but I have not looked to see where they are coming from. It will be next winters project, but at least I know where to start looking. Thanks a lot.

When the clutch pedal is up the countershaft and reverse idler in
the transmission are also turning, so those are also possibly making
the noise.
