Farmall M shift cable

I have 1942 farmall M ( has been in the family since new) It Runs good but the cable that shifts the overdrive 9 speed is stuck. I can only use it as a 4 speed with the road gear. I need to replace or get it unstuck. It has not been shifted in over 25 years. Does anyone know if it can be disconnected and remove by removeing the plate on the bottom of the case. It enters the case on the right side thru a hole just forward of the belt drive. I have tried all sorts of Kroil oil and no luck. I think I need to replace the cable. I am hoping it can be removed without going into the transmission. any pictures would be nice. Thanks

The Cable can be removed from the handle end with the hope of physical movement making it flex enough to break loose. There are also some commercial oil injectors that allow oil to be injected into the cable housing. Another: remove the knob, and nut from the operator end. Put it up vertical and clamp a hose over the threads. Fill the hose with ATF and let it stand. Jim

Look at the picture, the cable goes in the center housing loops back and then goes in the transmission. One item in the picture is a special bolt that takes the place of center housing to transmission housing bolt. Old cable sleeve is sticking out both ends. On the center housing end is a nut that screws on the outside of the cable and then screws into the special bolt. Inside the transmission the cable wire goes in the shift lever where the lock bolt and nut is. Some levers have a different lock screw set up than the picture. Should be able to replace the cable by removing the belt pulley gear box or a cover plate if no gear box. Probably have to drop the liftall unit or just the cover plate if no liftall to access the cable nut and get the cable removed and in.

Thank you very much I will give it a try

Thank you very much. It sounds like I need to access the inside of the transmission to disconnect the cable from the shift lever. Is that correct or can it be done from the center housing. I plan to try to lubricate the cable and get it to operate before I start major surgery. It is great old tractor. I helped my dad put in the high compression pistons and re sleeve the engine about 50 years ago. I spend 1000's or hours farming with it as a kid. I had to crank start it in those days. I plan to get it fully operational again and may use it to drill grass next spring.

The attachment can be accessed through the Belt Pulley attachment hole at the front of the trans.
If it has no belt pulley, there will be a tin plate over the hole. It has 6 bolts to retain the Pulley drive. Jim

If it has a pulley there will be two guide pins. They have threads on one end. Screw a nut on there and it will pull the pins out.
