I looked at a 560 I'm considering buying, wanted some input. The serial # indicate it's a 1962 model. A few things are a little unsettling about it and need to be checked out. It hasn't been started in a couple of years and I don't yet know if the engine is free, but the exhaust has been covered. The radiator seems dry, possibly leaked out. It has TA, fast hitch, Schwartz wide front, Koyker loader, good rear tires. I plan to try turning the engine over and draining the oil before making any decision. My obvious worry is that the coolant froze and cracked something. Any thoughts would be appreciated: other potential worries, what it might be worth as a worst case for salvage, replacement engine cost, etc. My last project was an M with a frozen engine (paid too much for that one unfortuantely). I've been using it for over 2 years, looking at the 560 to "modernize" a little.

Let's say the tractor is in "perfect" shape.

The reason it has a loader on it is because otherwise ya would have to continually pull a fuel tanker behind it. :>(

The tractor is either worth 3500 or 1500 (or 4000 to 2000 if the sheet metal and electrical system look usable, Good)depending on what you find when the engine turns or not.
Were it mine to buy, I would probably offer the 1500 as is where is and get the tires loader and front end for the price, and not try to turn the engine. If the engine turns and Actually starts, it becomes a much more valuable tractor to the owner. I am capable of the repair, if you are, do it. Jim

Unless you can buy it cheap look for one in better shape and running. Kind of like H's, there's a lot of them around. No reason to buy a basket case unless that's what you want to do. My 1st project was a basket case 53 stage 1 SH that I proceeded to put 6K in. Part of that was lack of knowledge, but I wanted one and I wanted a project. I still use and enjoy it a lot.

I was thinking in the $1500 range if the motor isn"t stuck and I don"t find water in the oil. Haven"t spoken to the owner yet so he may have drained the radiator. Sheet metal is ugly but straight, the loader is useable. I"m just looking for an inexpensive chore tractor that can bale 15 or 20 A of hay.

Ya know everyone is always complaining about fuel ecomony of the gasers, fact is if you check out tractor data .com you will see there is less than a gallon per hour difference between the diesel and gas at the pto and drawbar rate. Will that add up over time, yes BUT, Diesel is more expensive currently and with the ease of starting in the winter with gas (belive your from MN? ) it's worth it. 460/560 diesels are hard to start in the summer let alone the winter Plus i'm assuming your not farming 100 acres or anything so the fuel difference shouldnt matter too much.

The other thing that I consider is that if the tractor isn't pulling at max load it won't use that much fuel. When I was farming I had a 4320 and baled quite a bit of hay with it. Fuel consumption was half on the rake or baler compared to the chisle plow or disk. And you are dead on starting anything gas v.s. diesel at -10 in Jan or Feb.
