H Steering Worm Gear

Thought I had the wobble fixed, but it"s back. I think I"m gonna need the actual new worm gear / shaft. I think the circle-gear will be OK. Haven"t torn into it yet. Anybody know the best place to get a new worm gear / shaft?

If the problem is that the worm gear is worn into the housing and is thus allowed to move back and forth you can remove this play by putting a washer under the pipe plug on the front end of the worm gear bearing. My H went from about 1/3 turn of play in the steering to virtually none. My first washer was too tight and made the steering stiff so I put in a thinner one.

As Zach points out, it could be a loose bearing in the housing. The ball bearing under the cap is critical to tightness. If the shaft can move in or out at all when turning the wheel through its freeplay that bearing is the issue. Clean well around the hole where the shaft comes out of the housing toward the driver. Mark it all around with a sharpie while it is being held at one end of the freeplay (bungie). Then turn it the other way and see what happens to the mark.
Another test is to feel the bolster shaft where it passes through open space just below the steering box while someone steers through the freeplay. Forward and back mocement there (not around and around) is a worn upper shaft bushing.
Quite common. Jim

I also replaced the bolster bushings. The bolster shaft had some wear on it, but did not seem to make a difference in the wobble. That is the last part to be replaced.

A worn out worm gear will cause excess play in the steering and that is ALL it will do. That wobble is coming from something else entirely.

I agree the actual wobble is not caused by looseness in the steering mechanism. I it caused by tires and wheels and the loose parts will make it more pronounced. Just jack it up and turn those front wheels and watch them move up and down and or side to side and try to correct the problem down there.
