OK, I have been over this tractor from stem to stern. There are no tags. Is the serial number stamped onto this tractor anywhere?

The tractor is a Farmall super a. I was told it was a 1948.
 
look for date castings, one will be on the block, final drives, major cast parts. It will look like 2 23 Z etc tthat would indicate a year of Feb. 23 54. Each letter corresponds to a different year. Post the letter on here and someone will tell you or look them up in the archives here.

Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book shows the chassis plate on the right side of the tool box and seat support. Engine number is on a pad on upper right side of crankcase.
 
if it really is an 'H' code there it would put that part in 63. Was that number off the block? does it have a dip stick?

Either the "H" is a replacement part or mostlikely you misread it. Look for more casting codes or the engine number, if your serial number plate is missing.

"R" is the casting code for 48 - But the letter R is also used very often in part numbers also cast into parts. So be careful not to confuse them.
