leaking oil filter

The oil filter on my H Farmall started leaking oil while on the big Eastern Iowa Tractorcade. The oil is coming out at the top of the canister.

Someone told me I tightened the bolt too tight.

That filter has not been changed for a year and never leaked until on the long ride this past week.

Is the bolt too tight?

Should I just change the oil and filter now instead of usually doing this in the fall? When putting on the new filter I guess I could then see the problem?

Do you have the brass washer on, under the bolt head?

They get lost easily. If not, I'd look for one and try that. If it is there, check out the condition of it.

Often that leak is caused by someone who has not removed the old gasket when changing the filter. Look closely at the groove on the cap.

There is a copper crush washer between the bolt & canister, sounds like it's time for a replacement.

Be careful about tightening that bolt TOO much. I have one that apparently was over-tightened by a previous owner, and actually crushed and distorted the top of the canister. Soon as I found out why I couldn't get it to stop leaking, I found another canister. The wrecked canister makes a nice ornament setting up on the shelf.

Thanks for the info on the crush washer, I"ll look for that when I put on a new filter. I always pull the old seal (O ring) so that"s not the problem. It leaks out the top.

Thanks for all your help, will "get "er done".

As others have said, be careful not to overtighten the bolt. I did that once on our Farmall M and my Dad was not pleased as I recall. If you don't have a new copper or brass washer to hand, you can resurface the old one by rubbing it down with wet and dry paper or even on concrete if you have nothing else. It works very well until you can get a replacement. Be quite sure that no grit remains on the washer before refitting.

I did as several of you suggested; I got a new copper washer for the bolt that holds the filter canister down. I drove the H today for a couple hours and no leaking at all.

Thanks for your advice.
