Farmall H… Check Radiator Before Fitting!

I had the Farmall H radiator re-cored and made like new. So I rebuilt the water pump, got new hoses, a thermostat and all the usual things you need for this sort of job. The radiator came back with a new core and all looked excellent. So I fitted the radiator. Farmall H and M owners know all about having to remove the steering shaft and the cursed studs in the bottom of the radiator. Fitted hoses and all was well. Filled the radiator and… rapid dripping. Tightened up the lowest hose and that leak stopped immediately, but the radiator bottom tank leaks profusely. So now I will have to remove it again. Next time. I'll plug the drain and fill the thing BEFORE it goes back on the tractor. At least my wife had the good grace not to laugh!

That stinks. I would have done the same thing. I guess I should trust new/rebuilt parts less.

I think of the old ABC series "Wide World of Sports" theme when
working on a "new" piece of machinery. Wondering when the next "the agony of defeat" moment will be, realizing that there was a much better way of getting to a particular
part, or setting something up.

The radiator is now back out of tractor. I found the leak easily. Water pours out through the hole for the mounting stud on the off-side of the radiator. The other stud hole does not leak. Tomorrow I will take the radiator back to the chap. I discovered it was what is known in Australia as a "Friday Afternoon" job. Done in a hurry before the weekend. It was extremely frustrating because I have not driven this tractor with its steel wheels and Saturday afternoon was looking just right to begin. Maybe next weekend…
