IH 460U steering wheel free spins

A month ago I was using my tractor to move dirt, this loads the front end down quite a bit. I also had a low tire that makes it fun to steer when the tire rolling on it side.

Anyway the steering wheel was only partially responding to turning the steering wheel. I thought maybe it was low on hy-tran and decide to change the fluid and the filter.

It is worse now, the steering wheel freespins, has no effect what so ever on the front tires turning.

Is it still low on fluid or did the steering box go out? It has had a IH 2000 loader on it for many many years.

Any input ideas appreciated.

Is the Utility steering box the same as the more common 460 regular size?

sounds like your going to be taking aprt your box, something gave way inside it. First just check the splines on t your steering wheel or column to be sure but it is probably the box....good luck and let us know.

Loaders on these tractors do stress the steering gear boxes. It is mechanical with assist from the hydraulics. If it spins and the arms do not move, it is broken pretty radically. The parts are (as far as I know) are not made to fix it. There may be new parts in someones inventory, or used parts, but the best that would be is to make it work, not truly fix it. My opinion is that a retrofit using Jackson Power Steering (dot com) components is the best answer. Jim

Thanks Guys. Anybody have any luck putting used on?

I am thinking there are lots of salvage yard 460's. Wondering if the 460U is the same as the Row crop.

It is not similar at all.
The closest is probably a 350U but those are as hard to find, and the lower mount is different as well. D1fferent part number. Jim
