Runaway engine speed Farmall C

I purchased a C that was not running. After cleaning, oil change, clean up points and plugs, I gave it a try and it started right up. However the engine immediately ran up to such a high speed I had to shut it down. Can anyone advise me on possible cause of this?

I take it this was your first start up of tractor. Did you check the linkage from govenor to carb.to see if its stuck? Also check the carb to see if throttle plate may be stuck. If this is all free than its a problem in the govenor.

That could be a number of things. Linkage not hooked up or binding some place. Gov. stuck and not moving as in the linkage. Or the gov it self is bad and would need to be replaced/rebuilt. Might be a good idea to get an I-T manual for that tractor so you have more info and pictures IH-8 is the one you need

For whatever reason the governor is not closing the carb throttle on RPM increase.

Test by setting the governor handle to idle. Then grab the governor to carb link - it should move freely by hand. If it does not, disconnect link at the carburetor end and determine where it's stuck (carb or governor).

If it's stuck at the carb end you'll need to remove the carb and free up the throttle shaft.

Otherwise you'll need to go inside the governor and determine the problem.

The clearance between the rod from the carb to the gov. linkage is very close to the block, check to see if you rod needs to be pushed into the carb more.

I can personally attest that getting the governor housing off the tractor is not a huge deal. Just keep track of which bolts come from which holes because they're all different lengths for the most part. The weights and shaft stay in the engine so nothing goes "sprong" on you.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've ordered the IT manual as it appears that I am going to have to look into the governer a little closer.

Ther is a thru shaft that runs across the front of the engine from the governor to the carb. Remove the governor housing and replace the shaft seals & bushings. Adjust the carb to shaft linkage per the manual. This is quite common on the C's & Super C's.
