need help finding steering assembly for IH 240, serial #2498-P. wide front, manual steering. available parts manuals show very different steering assembly from what I have. I had to cut-off steering wheel to remove steering assembly from steering sector below the gas tank. I have a one piece steering shaft that is 24 inches long from splined end to sector end which is worm gear and includes bearings. only pictures that show similar tractor steering arrangements are of IH 460 with same sector and steering control arm from sector paralleling outside frame to front spindle. would appreciate the help on this problem!

No parts resource here, but Jacksom Power Steering Systems (dot Com) has reality to make it much better. Jim

The tractor is an IH 240 wide front manual steering utility. It has a c-123 engine which I just refreshed with new rings and bearings. local IH tractor experts are baffled when I try to ID. parts needed for steering overhaul which is why I can't locate needed parts. the parts manuals don't reflect my issues for correct parts. the steering sector is below the gas tank and has a steering control arm coming from the output shafts stubbing out from each side controlling the left and right front wheel respectively. I need the one piece steering worm shaft, bearings and seal from steering wheel to this gear box. this arrangement is similar to IH 300 or 460 tractor. don't know of part #'s to request. parts I did order had to be returned as un-useable, incompatable to my situation.
The tractor is decaled as IH 240, I suppose anybody could slap different ID decals on it!

That description just doesn't match a 240U. The 240 steering gear was in the front bolster. The only steering parts between the steering wheel and the front were shafts and universal joints, a power steering unit if so equipped. You really need to post some pictures. How about some part numbers from your steering housing and related parts?

hi jim---
trying to fix this machine has been a challenge!
I recently rmv'd. gas tank to open steering sector in order to rmv. parts debris from prev. attempts by others to get to problem with troubled steering. I do have casting stenciled #'s of steering sector as IH 25997, transmission casting has # 367050R1 and hydraulic res. has # 370957R1.
appreciate the help with this critter!

IH 240U should look like this... http://www.external_link/farm-tractors/000/3/1/313-international-harvester-240-photos.html

If you look at the "Photos", you can see the steering shafts and U-joints from the steering column to the front bolster. You have the C123 like the 240U has, but I can't come up with a model that has that engine and steering arms from the sector to the front spindles.

Strange deal, I have a tractor that looks like a IH 240 by sheet metal, its decal stenciling is Ih 240, but resembles the IH 300 with the different steering sector under gas tank and separate steering control arms to front spindles--left and right wheels.
explains why I get wierd parts when ordering.

That explains a lot. 367050R1 is the transmission housing for a 330 or 340. 370957R1 is the oil strainer cover for the early 340. So your tractor has to be a 340. The 330 and 340 originally had the C-135 engine, which is very similar to a C-123. Maybe somebody swapped engines, although I don't know of a version of a C-123 that will bolt up to that chassis.

I don't know your 25997 number.

Here are pictures of a 240 and a 340 that I found on this site. As you can see, at casual glance they are similar. With a close look you can see they are much different.
