I am putting an alternator on my tractor that requires an external regulator. Can I use the regulator that is on the tractor, and if so which wires do I need to hook where.
Thanks for the help

Nope....reusing the existing regulator will NOT work! It also risks burning out your new alternator. Rather you must use the regulator designed specifically for your particular alternator.

Post back the alternator you have - ie. the make/year of the vehicle it came from. Someone here can then help you with the wiring.

Most regulators ground the field curcuit to make the generator charge. An alt. needs juice to make it charge. The regulator should be a match or the contacts may burn out early. Tell us the make & model of the alt. for more help.

Twelve volt systems… I'm almost feeling old fashioned with my 6 volt tractors! As a matter of interest what do you guys do in the U.S. with high compression diesel engines in the Winter? Do you stick with 12 volts? Here we use 24 volt systems. Our old AW-7 Diesel with the 264 diesel (starts and runs on diesel) was 12 volt and it was a cursed nuisance in the Winter. If the batteries were not relatively new and fully charged it had to be jump started. 24 volt system fixes that problem really well. Do you use 24 volt systems in the U.S.?

350 diesels were always 12 volt from IH. Still a lot of those were hard starters. USA D264 are gas start engines and able to start okay in the cold if in good shape on 12 volts.

My 350D starts pretty good from the mid 20s up using the manifold air pre-heater on the first start of the day. After that it will start easy. Below 20 a block heater is the only way to go. I'm talking Fahrenheit.

Have you considered a one wire alternator? It's easy to convert a Delco to one wire, no external wiring at all, one large wire out and that's it. I have that set up on my Oliver 1850 and it's great. Do a google search and you will find lots of information on it. PK
