No 100 balanced head mower

Went to an auction to look at a mower conditioner and found an IH No 100 trailer mower sitting next to it. I had been looking for one so I picked it up. There is a fairly loud growl/rattle when the PTO is engaged AND disengaged. This is coming from the mower but I have not figured out just where. Neither my 115 or 120 mowers makes any noise when engaged/disengaged. I am going to run over the mower with a helper to run the PTO and see if I can locate the source. Any balanced mower experts with an opinion on what to look at?

You're saying it still growls with the PTO OFF, and nothing moving?

Making noise with the PTO off is a bit weird, but perhaps noise is being transferred through either the hitch or the PTO. I know that on my Farmall 350 with the PTO off, the PTO spindle does vibrate slightly (the planetary gears still spin inside the PTO housing).

May be slop in lower pivot point from a bad bearing.
