A won't start

I just finished a top end on a 44 a and I can't get fuel to it. I'm
hand cranking and it will run a few seconds on starting fluid. I
did a carb gasket kit float valve and seat needle Valve are all
new. It's a zenith and should be straight forward right?

well, you need to make sure the entire fuel delivery path is working. STart at the fuel tank, make sure fuel bowl, tank inlet, etc are free and clear and not filled with crud. Then the line from the bowl to the carb. then the carb. then lastly make sure you don't have a vacuum leak on the intake manifold. verify all those are clean and working.

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while a helper hand cranks the engine. See if there's good suction on your hand. If there's very little suction means you have low intake manifold vacuum. Make sure your valves have enough clearance. Set them at .017" cold. Squirt some of that starter fluid around the area where your intake manifold gasket mates to the engine and see if the engine fires. Make sure it's not leaking. Hal

Good suction and plenty of fuel to the bowl. I can"t even get it to flood. all passages were cleaned well before install. I really don"t want to tear the Carb apart for something simple I am missing.

so, when you say "bowl", you mean on the carb, right? When you take the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb bowl, lots of fresh gas comes out, correct? solid, pencil size stream? Have you tried giving it a shot of ether when cranking? Is the air cleaner hooked up when you attempt to start? If so, did you check to make sure it isn't plugged?

I got my A from a neighbor where it had sat taken apart for years. I got it all back together, took the carb apart and cleaned it up. Put it back together to run it. Had similar experience to you. Eventually I figured out there was a mouse nest and part of a realy old rag in the manifold. No carb problem, but also no air/fuel getting to spark plugs.

It's a runner! Picked up some starting fluid (along with hose clamps I forgot until I filled the radiator). A few squirts and she took right off, ran for half hour or so listening to the valves and drive train. Shut it down because I wanted to see if I could get it started just choke, and no luck. I'll get her figured now that I know she'll run. Thanks for all the help!
