Is it a cable drive or digital tach? If it is a cable drive check the cable for wear or being broke, check cable drive to make sure it is turing. If both those things are working the tach itself may be bad. That is what was wrong with my 1586. Had to find a replacement.

If it has the digital electrical tach there is a switch that supplies it power to the tach after the tractor gets oil pressure. I have had these switches go bad. the switch is screwed into the oil gallery on the block just to the rear of the oil filters. I replaced one on our 186 about 3 weeks ago and found a switch at napa for about $8.50 and Case IH wanted about $60 for it. the napa # is OP6624 or OP6616. I like the first one it is physically shorter in size but either one will fit they and work the same.
