Anyone who has used rtv on their manifold?

Hey all, i have searched this up and down and found both good and bad to this topic. Well the gaskets that came with my new manifold seem really flimsy and cheap and i want something that lasts. Well where i work we have the super duty industrial permatex in a calking tube that is also oil and gas resistant. Im reluctant to use this but has anyone ever used just permatex on their manifold. Iv seen its almost common practice to coat both sides of the gasket but im thinking im just going to use the gasket maker. Any opinions? Thanks!

i would just use the aerosol can of coppercoat gasket sealer. spray both sides of the gasket, then assemble. too much goobey gasket sealer can get in to a lot of places that it shouldn't.

Get your gaskets from CaseIH and forget the sealer, you don't need it unless the other surface is badly pitted.

I go with Allan! I have used it on intake port so you get no air leak on old pitted manifolds. oldiron29

If you don't have a good floor model belt sander then take those "old pitted manifolds" to a shop for milling, planing or surfacing.
I have an older Craftsman 6" belt sander and surfacer, with the attached disc sander. Slap a new 80 grit belt on there and it will flat "plane a manifold". Does a great job on brake discs. Did a super job on all the rear wheel clamps getting them clean and even. Does heads of square head bolts. Also does a million other jobs for a restorer. Handiest tool in the shop.

The only RTV I buy anymore is the permatex "ultra-black". It sticks to anything and is even somewhat gasoline resistant. It sounds like the same stuff you"re talking about.

Coating both sides like you"re thinking is extra insurance against manifold leaks.

I don't recall what temp it's rated for on the tube.
Now there is a regular black RTV by Permatex but the one I'm talking about is specifically called "ultra-black" and costs like 15 bucks for a caulk gun sized tube.

Ok, the website says it's good to 500 degrees. Here's some coppery stuff I remember using eons ago but I don't remember how well it performed.

Paint both sides of the gasket with coppercoat, made by permatex, I use on all steel faced gaskets, head gaskets. Make sure your manifold is flat, take it to a machine shop, about a 2 minute job if you get the right guy.
