Here's an oddball for you: My friend wants me to get his 1974 IH Scout II back running, which it hasn't done in 25 years. When it got stored in a barn, the battery was removed, and both cables are black with no wiring diagrams that I can find, so what is it, a positive or a negative ground? Don't want to ruin something when I fire it up in a few days. Thanks.

It's probably 12 volts being a 1974. It probably has a negative ground. Take a look at the distributor and see if it has 12 volts on it.
The battery cable that's grounded it should fit the small neg terminal on the battery. Hal

My '78 Scout II was 12 volts, negative ground.

I can't remember for sure what my '65 Scout was, but I think it was 12 volt negative ground too.

I had a 1974 rust bucket scoutII and it is 100% - ground. It also has an alternator on it and if you did hook it up back wards you would let the smoke out of the alternator the moment you hooked it up back wards

All regular production Scouts from the start to end of production were 12 volt negative ground.

By 1957, ALL International light and medium trucks were 12V negative ground. Between '55 and '57, some IH light trucks were 12V positive ground [or so I've heard from the folks over at www.oldihc.org]...but this was in the day of generators and not alternators.
