WHAT KIND OF TRANSMISSION DO I HAVE

I am confused. My owners manual states hydrostatic transmission has low and high and the standard transmission has a clutch and gears.

I have a IH 3514 with 2 pedals on the left forward and reverse. I also have a gear shift with 4 gears but no clutch pedal.

Does anybody know ehat kind of trans I have?

I'd say you have a hydrostatic, similar to an automatic in a car, with 4 speeds forward and 4 reverse. Depending on the type of work you're doing you can choose a gear for power and/or speed. Likely it's similar to the Masseys with reversomatic. They have a torque convertor that drives through a 2 speed transmission with a high and low range, effectively 4 speeds forward and 4 reverse. Depending on whether it's loading a truck or being moved down the road, it's a matter of choosing the right gear combo for the work.

Does sound like a shuttle.

Pop off that top cover up there by the starter and see if there is something wrong down on the shaft/shift mechanism; as in splines stripped out on the shaft or some such thing.

Sure don't know; just guessing at this point.

I have an Oliver 1600 industrial loader with a similar transmission.

It has a 6 speed manual shift gearbox with no reverse gear positions. In place of a foot clutch it has a Funk "Reverse-O-Tork" reverser - essentially a torque converter with single a speed forward and reverse.

A pair of pedals on the right foot selects forward or reverse - depressing either pedal farther increases the throttle. The brake pedals on the left.

Properly adjusted the system works quite well. But there's a lot of linkages that can wear and get out of adjustment.

It's great for shuttle tasks like moving snow. You must however select the right gear for the work to be done. Choosing too high a gear will usually still get the job done but will quickly overheat the reverser.

IH Construction Equipment (CE) called it a Hydra-Shuttle, 3414, 3514 & 3616 all were Torque Converter no clutch, 4 gears forward or reverse, these were not available to a straight Farm Equipment AG dealer. The loader & external tractor frame were called a intregal built unit. The 2 brake pedals on the right side for left or right brake, the left hand set inner pedal for forward, the outer left was for reverse, press them both at once the engine speed increased, hand controls for boom & bucket or steering. Was engineered for fast loader cycle. Hyd backhoe optional

Thanks Allan. See my remarks IH 3415 fixed. I cleaned the control valve (where the foot pedal linkage goes into the transmission) and replaced the o-rings and gasket. Works, YA--HOO!!!

Still trying to find access to the center section to find those relief, check, and shuttle valves. Of course for future reference.

I need to change my fluid and filter but am a little scared. Don't want this baby to have more problems. I read forums of issues when people change their fluid, but I am going to have to do it....
