Farmall 656D Gear Drive Transmission

Does a F656D transmission / gear case have a breather? Our F656D - used for bushhogging...runs great...4 - 6 hours at a time...continues to somehow get water / condensation in the tranney. The gear oil has to be changed A LOT....turns milky all the time. An old Farmall Mechanic told me that it is due to the breather being stopped up. True or False?

I see this is your 2nd post about this, I am wondering if you have to change the Hytran more than yearly, I had worked at IH/CNH dealers for 47 years, this is unusual if you are, if it continues to degrade the Hytran would be suspect in its storage or the supplier. There is not a breather that causes this or prevents it. If nothing else check the containers for water that it comes in. 55 gal drums are bad if stored upright, they should be laid down with bungs horizontal. Wish you luck.

Many years ago, had a customer who owned about four 656 tractors. One of them was just giving him a terrible time with milky, crappy fluid in transmission. He changed it way more than on the other ones. He brought it in and I dug into it and found he was missing an o-ring on the return tube coming down from the top of rear cover. This was causing a slight aeration problem all the time. Not enough to make hydraulics act up. There are a couple of different versions of that return system. One uses a hose between upper and lower and other uses a tube all the way. Hoses blow, or get soft, pipes crack and leak. They both return the oil flow from the aux valves right back into the suction tube to hydraulic filter to help prevent cavitation but if they leak above oil level they will cause it.
