Farmall 450 lpg clutch

I am new to this forum and new to the tractor restoration hobby. I have farmall 450 lpg and i am having some clutch problems. When i bought the tractor it didnt run and after a while i got it running and it ran fine. Then i figured out that it needed a new clutch and pressure plate. So iwent onto ebay and bought a replacement clutch and pressure plate. I then split the tractor and put the new clutch in. I followed all the steps and put it back together and when i went to start it it started fine but after about 5 minutes running it started shooting out white smoke from the crankcase breather. I checked the oil which was at the correct level. Even after i put the new clutch in, it still doesnt seem to work. I adjusted the clutch forks but still no luck. If somebody could help me out and tell me how to fix the engine from smoking and help me get the clutch working properly.

Aside from the engine smoking does the clutch engage
and disengage properly (ie work right)?

No the clutch does not disengage and after i put the tractor back together it seemed like the engine was harder to turn almost like something was binding up

When IH started making the IPTO there is a shaft within a hollow shaft. One is splined to the pressure plate, the other to the disk. If you installed the disk and bolted the pressure plate to the flywheel before putting the tractor back together it is quite possible that you bent the clutch plate (don't ask me how I know, but the answer is obvious). Best to leave the plate loose and tighten the pressure plate after you put the front and rear together.

I think CNKS has the answer for you and it sounds
like it is going to come apart again. Reminds me ,
many years ago, boss comes into the shop carrying a
clutch pressure plate. It was crushed. Guy says he
put it in and it doesn't work. Well, how do you tell
a customer he messed up. I think the boss just gave
him a new clutch and I gave him some advice. The
real trick to messing things up is to get it
corrected before anyone else finds out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

O.k. I think i understand how i messed up and does not make
me happy that i have to split it again but i guess if i want it to
work i have to split It again. On the other hand would anybody
know why my tractor smoked out the crankcase breather tube
after splitting the tractor? I didn't do anything to the engine
while splitting the tractor so i don't know why it would do that.
Before i split the tractor the engine ran just fine.

Smoke out of the breather, well, it is either blow by
past pistons, coolant vaporizing from oil(but you
said oil level was ok) or a hot bearing. I would
pull drain plug and check for foreign material. If
engine seemed stiff you may just have put enough
pressure on crankshaft thrust bearing during
assembly to smoke it.
These engine do no have a full flow oil filter so stuff goes through the whole lube system if any foreign material is floating around in there. You can pull filter and look for filings also. Sure hope not but can't come up with any other good
options.

Well i finally found time to split the tractor and i found out i did
a very dumb thing. I put the pressure plate in backwards and
that sure explains why it wouldn't disengage. This morning i
drove it for the first time and it shifted great! I just wish i had
done it right the first time so i didn't have to do it all over again.
Finally i got to drive it!!!!! Thanks for the help, much
appreciated.

You must've put the CLUTCH DISK in backwards, not the pressure plate.

There is no way the tractor would go back together with the pressure plate in backwards.

How's the white smoke issue? White smoke is usually water vapor. If it doesn't clear up you've got coolant getting into your crankcase somehow. Odds are this is the reason the tractor was parked.

Yeah i meant clutch plate not pressure plate. No the tractor is
not smoking any more. I suspect it smoked because of the
pressure on the throw out bearing but now since it is put back
together correctly it dosn't smoke. The reason it was parked
was because of the clutch going bad and that the cam gear
was broken, but finally i got all that fixed and it works great!
Thanks!
