966 TA question

about the discussion on TA"s i have a question.

I seen guys use the TA to help get the tractor moving in High 4th range (TA Back) and throw it forward once at road speed.

Is that OK??

I pull the TA back when bushhogging once in awhile to slow down a lil bit without throttling down. is that ok??

I guess i need a lession.

the worst thing you can do to a TA is coast with it, shifting it at working speeds shouldn't cause problems --running in hi=4th wide-open and shifting TA to slow down is abuse. IMHO

Coasting doesn't hurt the hydrauic operated TA's as they have the hydraulic lock up clutch to prevent free wheeling but I sure would agree that it is tough on them to down shift at highway speeds. That is one reason I never cared for the electric TA shift on the 3088 series tractors. On the manual operated ones you can , at high speeds, pull ta back to middle position, allow engine to pick up drive train and then pull lever the rest of the way back with no lurch, clunk, jerk or whatever. Fact is , I test TA's that way also as a bad sprag will often times show up then before it will under a load.
