I just put a new 6 volt battery in my h , my question is, should there be a small amount of charge showing on the meter if the battery doesn't demand any charge, I guess the voltage regulator doesn't kick in if the battery is'nt needing a charge.THANKS

What CNKS says! A fully charged battery will make the ammeter hand "dance" couple amps or so on the charge side of center.

You can check by taking a voltage reading across the battery with the engine running at speed. If the battery is fully charged and you have good generator & regulator you will see between about 7.2 and 7.6 volts.
