Cooling system flush question

M is getting hot and many recommended a flush so thats what im going to do on saturday. As far as the flush goes, Ive heard using vinegar cleans the system well, I was going to use a gallon of vinegar then top the rest off (5 gallons) with water, is that enough vinegar?

My next question is how do you tell if the water pump is working correctly? I dont want to flush the whole system only to find that the water pump is not sending anything through the block...

Finally, should i pull the water jacket cover and clean that? I read something in the archives about making sure to pull the water jacket cover, clean it, and replace the gasket? Ive never done this before, anyone help regarding how?

Thank you so much for the help gentlemen, ~Anthony

Get the engine up to operating temperature and then carefully remove the radiator cap and look inside. If the water pump is doing what it is supposed to be doing, you will see the water flowing into the top of the radiator.

Sure won't hurt anything to remove the water header cover and have a look, but if the engine is as full of rust as expected, plan on replacing the entire cover because the directional baffles on the inside of that cover are probably just about gone.

use straight vinegar in the cooling system. fill it up, run it for 10 or 15 minutes, then let it set a couple days, then flush it out with clean water. like rusty said, if you pull the cooling jacket cover, its prolly all rusted up, so order a new one with a gasket first before you take it apart.

Vinegar NO water. What I do is drain the system and flush it with a garden hose. Then I fill it with vinegar and run it as I would for any other job I would need to do. If or when it does start to get to hot then stop shut it down and let it cool. Of course bring it back to where you can work on it and flush again with the garden hose. I also rig up a hook up so as to be able to back flush it from the block drain. Once cool I drain it from the block drain then hook up the garden hose and remove the radiator cap and let the water flow for an hour or so. Fill it with water and run it. If it still gets hot take the vinegar you drained out and strain it and fill it with the vinegar again and do the run and flush thing again

I'm sure they cover the water jacket R&R. But even with the new cover and new gaasket it will want to weep a little coolant. SO tighten the bolts just snug then go around in a criss cross pattern and get them just tight. Wait a wekk and come back and give them all another 3/4 turn.
I'd wait to put any antifreeze in there until you are sure it is all good.
How did that tstat check out? Did you put in on the stove in water?

I ordered a new thermostat/gasket, water jacket cover/gasket, and radiator hoses and will hopefully get to it this weekend.....im going to check the old thermostat to see if its working just to rule that out and I dont plan on running antifreeze until I have figured it all out...ill let you know how it all goes and thanks for the help
