just re read an article in wheels of time, the article was about a man who went into a ih dealer in 1968 and wanted a diesel engine in a new ih pickup [ in that day nobody was making them] at the time he was driving a ford 165 miles a day to work and wanted better gas milage, ford and chevy had already turned him down, ih agreed to build him one [ for an extra 1100 bucks] they used a ih 301 diesel, as of a few years ago this engine was still going strong in its 3rd ih pickup chassis with 400,000+ on the clock [ a turbo was added in '95] what was this engine used in and what did they do for a bellhousing,

probly the same engine as was in a 715 combine that was the same as a 706(early ) without sleves, and could be a factory turbo from the same era td9 dozer i believe if it looks like a 560 or a 706 motor then I am sure that is what you have

The 301 diesel was a factory option in the IH light and medium truck lines at that time, although it is rare to find a truck with this option. It was also used in combines and some industrial equipment. It is fron the the same family of engines as the 263, 282, 301.

An IH 301 is a 282 without sleeves. IH put them in 403 503 and early 715 combines where the RPMS were turned up to 2750. They were also used as marine and truck engines. When IH put them in trucks, they were turned up to 3000 RPM. If you go through old sales literature you will find that IH offered the diesel engine in their trucks so this guy was lucky to find a company to offer a diesel. They did not custom build this for him, simply offered him a package they had available. With that said, I do not know of too many diesel pickups as that was not to common for the time.
