Farmall A erratic running

I have a 47 A that has been in storage for several years, Im about to start tinkering with it again, however what lead to its storage was very erratic running. Every time the throttle is advanced the engine will sputter and back fire, even worse if the throttle is moved very fast. This all started one day when the tractor was put under a load, ever since I"ve not been able to get it to run correctly. The inginition system was throughley gon through, timing and points set, it"s almost like the engine is leaning out. Just looking for suggestions .

I'd be checking the fuel system. It may suffering fuel starvation due to build up of dirt in the fuel system. Check fuel is clean and flowing properly through top the carburetor. If it is, then the carburetor itself should be checked and adjusted. I assume it has an H4 magneto? Was the condenser checked and/or replaced?

Yes it does have an H4 mag, not sure if I replaced the
condenser. I do remember good fue flow to the carb.

I agree with Sad, It is lilely in the carb itself.
Pull the drain plug on the garb, and make sure there is flow for several minutes (into a can). If so it is likely in the main jet passages. Jim

Flow to the carb means very little since it can get there but not get to the engine as it should. If it has the nonadjustable main jet like my BA then try this. Pull the plug off that cover the main jet and make sure you get a good steady flow of gas out of it. You can also take a small wire I use a torch tip cleaner tool to do it and run that wire into it to make sure it is good and clean then try running it. Also if choking it helps you do in fact have a carb problem and it is running lean. Common problem with the nonadjustable main jet carbs

It has an H4 magneto. Could be a cracked manifold, but I'd be checking the carburetor first; much cheaper! I had issues with my Farmall M refusing to idle properly. It just ran on the main jet all the time. Made 5th gear dangerously fast! Took the carburetor into Wilson Carburetor Service (totally useless if you are in the U.S., but the best place I have ever found in Victoria for carburetor repairs) and had it overhauled. Now the tractor runs as it should, apart from the very tired kerosene manifold.
