Power Steering

Where can I get a power steering unit for my Super MTA? I am exhausted anytime I drive my SMTA with a wide front. What else do I need besides the power steering unit?

steiner tractor parts sells the char lynn power steering stuff. you will need the torque generator that mounts in the steering shaft, the coupler, the mounting bracket that mounts the torque generator to the steering support, the port block and the priority valve.

This is the alternate way with a Behlen Torque Generator. The tractor is a SMTA. You could aso swap out the priority with an automotive PS pump.

Complete systems come up on eBay about once a month. Pricing is usually around $500-$800.

It would be interesting to find out when the priority flow diverter valve was first made commercially available.

That would have a lot to do with it...

First most power steering were aftermarket upgrades as most tractors at that time were sold with no power steering. Second a dedicated power steering pump was more dependable than a priority flow valve. Why do you think the 460 and 560 series came from the factory with a dedicated power steering pumps? Armand

A majority of dealer installed PS systems in 53-56 used the CharLyn Kits. That included a Saginaw PS pump made for GM and Packard cars of that era. And TG from Charlyn, Coupler generic, used by IH and JD. Brackets for the install . Here is the CharLyn on my SMTA
Note that coupler has both lateral and logitudinal relief. It was green when I acquired it off Ebay for 10 dollars, I guess none of the IH guys knew what it was. Extrememly important for smooth applcation of the forces.
If you can break the code you can get those pumps for less than $75. One $1 O ring and most are good to go.
I had local fab shop make up pump brackets for $20. Have a few spares too. Generic hoses from farm store for $30. It can be done for a lot less than $800.
I have a spare TG bracket, the one that attaches it to the steering column.
Oh and that manifold has been redone, the overspray is off the hoses, the lines are cleaned and it's all pretty much perfect; even though it is hidden under the hood

I have two SMTA's, stage I SM, & straight M with the exact same Char-lyn setup and a stage II SM with the Behlen with its own pump between the factory pump and dist. It's a little hard to change points/cap cuz it all fits real close to the oil filter:)

Pretty sure Cessna was making them when I went to work for them in '65, but we were strictly an OEM at the time... no "over the counter" sales.
Dad had the Char-Lynn system installed on a JD 60 in '58 with the Saginaw (GM) pump. Worked great and made a good hand warmer when picking corn in cold weather. One of our neighbors had a JD 60 with factory PS and after driving ours, said it was better than his.
