No Spark on Grandpa's '52 H

Got the carb back on my grandpa's '52 H, so I'm working on getting some spark now.

It is a 6V battery ignition system. With the ignition switch on, I've got 6V at both terminals at the front end of the coil, but no spark at any of the (new) plugs. [b:d9ff5e742d]What should my next troubleshooting step be?[/b:d9ff5e742d] Points, coil, plug wires???

By the way, I also can't get the wire from the coil to the center of the distributor cap out of the cap. The other end of the wire comes out of the coil just fine. [b:d9ff5e742d]Any tricks?[/b:d9ff5e742d] I've pulled hard enough on it that the cap starts to pull away from the ignition housing.

Thanks for all help!

I bet the points need cleaned or replaced. By what you wrote it might be time for points, cap, rotor, and wires. You already put in new plugs. Don't forget to set the gap on the plugs. While you are in there take the plate off that holds the points and make for sure the flyweights move in the distributor. It wouldn't hurt to put a little oil on them anyways.

when turning the engine over the voltage should drop on the point side of the coil when the points close if not, check the points for dirt, corotion, clean them and check the gap .020" (match book cover). I have found if the sit for a while, they get so they don't close electricly, and check for voltage at the points, good luck and hope this helps ,stumper

When she settin there not running with the ignition on (battery powered coil ignition NOT a Magneto) theres voltage on the coils input (from ign switch) but usually NO VOLTAGE (with respect to frame ground) on the coils output to distributor terminal because if the points are good and closed thats a direct to ground.

With ignition on and a test lamp on the coils output (to distributor) if you crank the engine over the light should flash on (points open) and off (points closed)

If theres always voltage on the coils output the points are badly burned or not fully closing

FIRST THING TO CHECK IS THE POINTS FOR CLOSING AND NOT ALL BURNED AND CARBONED UP

Heres my Ignition troubleshooting Procedure

Rub the points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny. Then see if there's fire to your plugs. Hal

If theres absolutley no condensor at all (or if its weak) she still sparks, but its a weaker spark.

If the condensor is a dead short theres no spark BUT he wouldnt see voltage on the coils output as he indicates. If its pure open, see the above.

Probably a bog gob of corrosion in that cap/ Take it off and get that wire out and inspect it.
Tag and number your plus wires before pulling all of them.
Pop the rotor and dust cover off and get a pipe wrench on the crankshaft (behind the radiator) and slowly turn the engine until the points open. Then measure that gap and clean the points and then reset the gap to .020
