my H steering shakes at certian speeds , what would be a quick fix to this problem I have been told the stering gear may be worn. THANKS

Run one tire low on pressure, may help a little. Most of these gears are just plain shot and need rebuilt. You should be ready to spend about $400 to go through one.

Jack it up and see how true the wheels run. Probably wobbling all over the place from worn holes in rim mount and wheel, besides all the wear in bushings, bearings, and gears and shafts.

If the steering wheel turns without turning the wheels you can remove the large cap behind the grill and add a washer in there. I did that on my H and the steering went from having nearly 1/2 turn of slop to having almost none. The washer keeps the worm gear from traveling back and forth. You may have to experiment, the first washer I put in mine made the steering too hard to turn so I put in a thinner one and it has been there for 2-1/2 years now.

With respect, and to add to the total input to the thread: The bearing under the cap should be held so it will not move in or out. The cap is used to hold this in place. The bearing is a deep groove style ball bearing. It is inder pretty serious stress. (never replace it with cheap replacement). Turning the wheel left and right through its dead travel while watching the shaft where it disapears into the box should show no in out travel.
Quite often the sector gear is also worn (nothing but a new gear or plasma spray rebuild and grinding will fix that.
The lower bolster bushing, and thrust bearing and the upper bolster bushing under the gear need to be tight. .010" is about all that will still keep it from wobble.
The universal joint at the hood bulge is also important for inspection. They are reparable.
