steel wheel wagon

Does anybody know where I can find out some info on steel wheel wagons? The casting number on the axle/wheel spindel is X35 and the number on the reach plate is X50. both locations have the IHC logo beside the number. (I am trying to find out how they got the wooden axle to stay in the spindel as they need to be replaced.)

There is a large square head screw in the center of the end of the skeins that hold it on the wooden axle. Can't say about the IHC part of your question. Joe

If you have some pictures we can take a gander. It could be a heat shrinkage friction fit which was not uncommon in those days. It the wood fits inside the metal then most likely they heated the metal in a forge. The well seasoned wood (Oak or Hickory) would have been cut for a very tight but slightly large fit. The hot spindle would have been forced or driven on and allowed to cool in place shrinking for a tight friction fit. I am guessing however since I do not have any pictures.

All my wagons including 2 IHC have the lag screw. Both of them have the conversion hubs with 16" rubber on demountable disk wheels.
