Im doing the first full service on my M as the new owner....temp does get to 90 degrees for a couple of weeks tops during the summer and we stay aroud 10 degrees in the winter....Is SAE 30 good to use? should I change it to a lighter weight in the winter?

see article at the following link:

I run Diesel Oil, 15-40 in my Farmall 300 year round with no problem over last 10 years. If I use straight 30 wt or 5W-30, I can use 2 qts in AM and 2 qts in PM if I am running it hard WOT.

I use shell rotella t 15-40 in everything from JD A, IH 706, IH 1586, and IH 1460. Works great in all weather.

ALL good advise so far.

DO NOT go to a straight 20 wt oil at any time for any reason!

It is MORE important to change it, than worry about brand.

Personally,if I run SAE 30(like I do now)I add aZinc additive .

If I would run 15 40 Rotella,(which I am not afraid to do) I would not add anything. General consensus is a lot of people are running the Rotella in everything.Gas or Diesel.

i run 15w40 in all my tractors except 1 gasser I rebuilt the top end on.. I'm trying synthetic in it after sticky valves and bent pushrods..e tc..

15w40 gives you a good temp range.. and is decent oil.. more zddp than a S only rated oil.. good for flat tappets...

I have 14 diesel motors in trucks, tractors and a gen set and I use Chevron Delo 400 15-40 in them all year round. When I pull a valve cover to adjust valves they are all nice and clean inside. Good stuff. Rotella is just as good. Pick a quality multi weight diesel grade oil and you'll be happy. PK

Put 10W30 in it and be done with it. Unless you know the engine has a high amount of wear (increased tolerances) I wouldn't use 15w40. 10W30 has the same viscocity at operating temp as 30W. Using 15W40 is the same as using 40W at operating temp. Using 40W in an engine that has the tolerences for 30W will cause more wear - not less.

I run a good straight 30w. year round in all my tractors. no starting problems in winter, down to 5-10 below and still on 6v. with older ones.

I use 10-w30 unical 76 in all my gas engines yearound I don't have any dsls. was told the heavier oil's won't lube the upper part of the cylinder like it needs. most important it has slipery oil and is clean & don't run it low sorry for all the confushion , stunper

Multi visc oils won't take the high temps that a straight weight will. To each his own though. A 30w has the same initial vicosity as a 15w40 oil. What do you gain with a 15w40 over a 30w? Oil companies really have sold us all a bill of goods with their marketing. When they couldn't sell light oils they sold us on the idea of multi visc oils. Harley Davison uses a 20w50. Imagine that a Harley engine has no trouble picking up a 20w oil at start up. A 20w is about the equivalent of a 40w. Piston aircraft engines use anywhere from a 30 w to a 60w, all straight weights. Go figure...LOL.
