H seat springs

I've heard that the seat springs for H's came in different "tensions" to accomodate heavier or lighter drivers and that they were marked by hash marks somewehere on the spring.
Can anyone tell me what hashmarks are for what weights, or at least which ones are "stiffer" springs? Also, WHERE on the spring is the hashmark? I've got a '40 H w/ a new shock but it rides way too low. I can't find any hash marks on it anywhere, and its been sandblasted. I've been on other H's that had much better support with the same seat set up, but have no idea what, if any difference there was in the spring and thought mine just may be shot from someone who was a bit on the portly side.

I have one off my SM that I am working on. 4 hash marks on top of the spring where it fits under the pan--hidden when installed. I thought they only came in 3 weights, if so these hash marks may be meaningless. I believe that the aftermarket only sells the heavy--I weigh 162 lbs or so and the heavy one on my SH keeps me up too high. However the one on my dad's H in the 50's, which one I don't know was fine, and I weighed less. They do sag with age.

Just checked the seat spring on the M. It's stamped IH-5 on the inside of the top coil. Where it fits on the stiffness scale I have no idea, but is about right for my 190#. I understand the stiffest spring is the only one currently available from Case-IH.

In the mid 60"s I did see one break when the 300# neighbor kid climbed up on dad"s H to go haul hay. Thankfully, he hadn"t started the tractor because it threw him off backward. Dad went to the dealer and ordered the heaviest spring available and installed it on whichever H the neighbor kid drove when he came to help with hay. I think that spring is still hanging in the barn; I'll take a look the next time I"m over there.

I have taken 2 springs and threaded them together and fit the 2 into the seat as one. It made the seat ride alot better. I figured 2 old weak springs are as good as one new one. And when I just happen to have an extra one laying around it was worth a try, and had it that way for over 10 years. Not quite the original look but better than a sore back.

If you buy one of the new replacement springs they are very stiff. I put a new one on my 450 along with a new shock and like the ride. The seat drops about 2 inches when I set on it and I weigh about 230lbs.

looks like I'm out of luck at 240......

I saw an M last night It had a football in the spring. The guy was a big man over 300 Lb He loves the new ride

Dad doubled up the springs on the W-400. It's about perfect for me as far as cushioning, and perfect for him because it sits higher and makes it easier to reach the pedals.
